"Spain has done what it should and now new horizons are opening for everyone. The time has come to bring back many day-to-day activities," said Pedro Sanchez who is the Prime Minister of Spain. “From 8 June, La Liga will be back. Spanish football has a huge following but it will not be the only recreational activity that will return."

The league’s president Javier Tebas said he had hoped Spain's top flight would restart on 12 June, although La Liga is yet to confirm an official restart date. With the government assurance we can there hope that soon we shall have a definite date matches to return to Spain top-flight football. This week saw many teams now start training in groups of not more than 10 players. We look at some of the things that teams will be squaring for when action resumes.

The La Liga title race is now a two-horse race between Barcelona and Real Madrid, the top of the table defending champions Barcelona are currently at 58 points two more than second-placed Real Madrid. The Los Blancos blew up there lead on top of the table by a surprising shock defeat away to Real Betis when they lost 2-1 and allowed Barcelona to reclaim the top spot when they defeated Real Sociedad 1-0.

Both teams are buzzing up for the return of action with both getting a boost with the return of several players from injury. Barcelona will be happy with the return of Luis Suarez who will provide firepower in the striking department, the Catalan side had been blunt in front of the goal with the French man Antoine Griezman failing to fill his boots. Eden Hazard is pushing to be fit right in time for the return of La Liga, Hazard has been out for two months and his return will be a boost for the Los Blancos. We are in for a mouth-watering title race in La Liga when action resumes.

Atletico Madrid’s domestic form this season has not been good and currently they are sixth on the table meaning they are out of the champions league contention. The Los Rojiblancos are currently one point behind fourth-placed Real Sociedad and fifth-placed Getafe who are both tied on 46 points. The Diego Simeone led side will hope to rediscover the form that saw them knock-out Liverpool out of the champions league in a drama-filled second leg tie played at the Anfield before the corona pandemic shutdown football activities.

The push for champions league place is a wide-open contest from the third-placed side Sevilla to the sixth place Atletico Madrid. Real Sociedad and Getafe have both performed well domestically this season and are currently fourth and fifth on the table tied at 46 points both. Real Sociedad also qualified for the Copa del Rey final where they are scheduled to face Atletico Madrid.

The relegation fight is also tight involving sixteenth placed side Eibar to the bottom-placed side Espanyol with only seven points in between them with only 11 matches to be played. Celta Vigo, Real Mallorca, and Leganes are involved in the fight to avoid the drop. Currently there is no specified date for the league to resume but training is on-going. We hope soon the League’s management will provide a date and soon we can see Spanish football back to our screens.
